Quarterly Update: June 2025

This will be a shorter update, since the past few months have been mostly dedicated to selling our house and preparing to move. An exhausting and exciting process! But moving day is in sight, and I’m looking forward to setting up my writing space and workshop in our new house.

In fun news, Out of Dark Waters has its first birthday tomorrow. I published it through Amazon KDP just short of a year ago. It’s also available now on Kobo and Kobo Plus!

I’ve continued to make progress, albeit slowly, on my manuscript of Oath and Memory, including a significant edit of the material I’d already written. I’m excited to get settled on the other end of our move, so I can refocus on it.

I completed a horror-fantasy short story entitled “The Music of Rdnzarim,” about a mysterious disease transmitted by song. Part of what interested me about the concept were the ways in which premodern people tried to explain the spread of disease – moral corruption, miasma, vampirism. I wanted to write a disease with mechanisms of transmission as strange and alien to modern readers as germ theory would have been to medieval people.

The Music of Rdnzarim took inspiration from Lovecraft, as well as the broader tradition of Weird Fiction. It probably has some Goosebumps and Twilight Zone in its genome too. The story is freely available in full!

As time allows, I’ve kept up with miniature painting and have been experimenting more with terrain building and miniature photography. (The top left is a character I played in a short D&D campaign!)

Finally, I’d like to share, below, a longer excerpt from my draft of Oath and Memory. Here, Tamlin and his company have fought through (and wisely fled from) orcish patrols, arriving at a dragon lair they intend to pilfer. In the domain of the mountain wyrm Auzom, they meet with an unlikely assistant, whom Saira enchants by arcane means.

I hope everyone manages to stay cool this summer. If you would like somewhat more frequent updates on my work and activities, you can find me on Bluesky
